They walk down an abandoned street in the middle of the night. Crisp, cool wind plays with her hair. He smiles down at her as she laughs, completely mesmerized by the woman attached to his arm. He takes her hand and spins her around in an impromptu sort of dance and then pulls her in for a brief hug. A friendly hug.
Just friends…
As he drops her off, he kisses the top of her head. A friendly kiss. He is rewarded with a cute little giggle before she says goodnight and disappears from his view. He’s just happy that she didn’t push him away. But then again, she never does, because she doesn’t know the real reason behind his hugs and kisses. She doesn’t see the intent behind his lingering touches.
They work together, drink together, eat, sing and dance together. When they are bored and have nothing to do, they do nothing together. But she does not share his feelings, and he is quite aware.
She calls him late at night to come over. She’s just broken up with her boyfriend and needs a friend.
Friend…
Of course, he’s there in record time, ready to save her from the evils of her ex. But something snaps. He can’t just sit there, merely a shoulder to cry on. How can she not see how this is killing him?
The argument starts small, but escalates quickly. It ends with him slamming the door on his way out. She’s throwing books at the walls and pillows at the counter and collapsing into a puddle of tears at the thought of losing her best friend. The one person she could always count on. The one person that knew her inside and out.
But he returns within the hour. He doesn’t knock or ring the door bell. He lets himself in, walks right up to her and kisses her. This time he makes sure that there is no doubt concerning his feelings for her. This is not a friendly kiss. This is passion. And she responds in turn.
They break apart and stare into each others’ eyes for one silent moment.
“I love you.” He says, almost breathless, earning another kiss from her.
