He looked over my shoulder and saw the small mess I made, and sighed, "You still haven't changed since high school, huh. You really need me in this house." he clicked his tongue and shook his head, "To be raising a child at my age... I pity myself."
"Hey! Just so you know, I do my equal share of chores around this house." I pouted and dipped a fry in ketchup.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say." he said, taking his own share of fries.
After a few moments of silence, I asked, "So how was work?"
He shrugged and shoved the fry inside his mouth, "Just the usual. Sitting around everyday and greeting that comes in for the scuba diving." I nodded, frowning a bit. He looked at me worriedly, "Hey, what's wrong, is the french fry too cold?"
I shook my head, "No, it's just that... I wish that we were able to go to college at the same time... If it weren't for money problems, you would have entered together with me."
"To be honest, I am a bit bummed that I couldn't go with you," I sighed, "But look, aren't you happy?" he held my hand and kissed the ring that adorned my wedding finger, "You're still with me even after all these years, which is amazing because I thought that you would have already left me by now."
"B-but, now you can't become an engineer like you want to!"
"Yeah, my job is boring, and it doesn't pay a lot... I really wish I could do better, because I want to spoil you with stuff like you did back then with me. Finish your college, and finish your burger!"
I laughed and wiped the ketchup off my face, and ate the fry. "Okay, okay, okay!"
The rest of the night was spent the usual. I washed the dishes since I didn't cook, and continued writing my next paper.
It was already past 2 when I finished. When I slipped into our sheets, he was already sound asleep. I smiled and stared at his face as he breathed even breaths.
I wished for a lot of things, many impossible things.
I wished that he had a life as fortunate as I did. I wished that he had been able to go to college. I wished that he would be happy with just me. I wished that he would be happy with this normal life, no matter how difficult. I wished that he would love me even with all my imperfections.
The last three was a reality, something that I am extremely happy about. Our life may not be perfect, but darn, it was the best life I could ask for.
I sighed and closed my eyes. I still had a lot of work to do. By the time I've graduated, I would gather enough money being a lawyer, and finally, finally. I would get him through college and let him become whatever he wants to be.
"I love you." I whispered.
"I love you too." I jumped and stared at him with wide eyes. He was awake?! Judging by the sound of his snickers, he really was.
