“Say what?” Aarav burst out. “That I love you? That every time you smiled at someone else, it felt like I was losing you?”

Aisha froze.

“You… love me?” she whispered.

“I’ve loved you for years,” he admitted. “But I didn’t want to ruin what we had.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I waited for you,” she said. “I gave you chances… but you never spoke.”

“I didn’t know…” he said, broken.

“Exactly,” she replied.

“Then why are you leaving?” Aarav asked quietly.

Aisha looked away. “Because staying hurts. Loving you silently hurts. Watching you pretend hurts.”

Her voice trembled.

“I thought distance would help me forget you.”

“Then what are we?” she asked.

Aisha smiled—this time, truly.

“Promise me something,” she said.

“Anything.”

He looked at her, steady and sure.

“I promise.”

They started meeting more often.

One evening, sitting by the lake, Aisha leaned her head on Aarav’s shoulder.

“Why does this feel like a dream?” she asked.

“Because we waited too long,” he said.

She smiled faintly. “Or maybe… we were just scared.”

Aarav looked at her. “Are you still scared?”

She didn’t answer.

That was his answer.

“Long distance doesn’t always work,” Aisha said one day, her voice unusually serious.

Aarav nodded. “I know.”

“What if we lose this?” she asked. “What if we become strangers again?”

He took a deep breath.

“Then we fight for it,” he said. “Not like before. Not silently.”

Aisha looked at him, her eyes soft but uncertain.

“I don’t want another ‘almost’ with you,” she whispered.

“Then don’t make it one,” he replied.
