Whispers Behind Unread Messages
She had completely forgotten to check the notifications on her phone.
She picked up her phone from the table, and the moment she unlocked it, the notification tones erupted like a sudden thunderstorm, breaking the quiet rhythm of the morning.
Her lips parted in a faint whisper.
“So many missed calls from Azan…”
A flicker of surprise passed through her eyes. Slowly, she opened WhatsApp. Before she could scroll through the earlier messages, her gaze froze on the last one.
“Mom, I have booked my ticket. Tomorrow evening, I will be with you.”
For a moment, she could hardly believe what she was reading. Her eyes remained fixed upon the screen while disbelief slowly parted her lips.
“Five years…” she whispered faintly. “It has been five long years… and my son, my dear Azan, is finally coming back.”
A warmth she had not felt in years suddenly rushed through her entire being. Overwhelmed with excitement, she wasted no time. The silence that had long consumed the house was instantly replaced by movement and life. She began cleaning every corner of the home, rearranging the furniture carefully, and preparing all of Azan’s favorite dishes, as though each small task carried fragments of her love within it.
Several times, she tried calling him, but every attempt was met with a busy tone. After a brief pause, she smiled softly to herself.
“He must still be travelling,” she murmured.
Unable to suppress her excitement any longer, she finally sent him a voice note.
“My dear son, I am waiting for you anxiously. I hope you are bringing your wife and children with you as well. I cannot explain how excited I am to finally meet them.”
At last, the long-awaited moment finally arrived when Azan returned home.
After exchanging formal greetings, they sat together for dinner. She had prepared every dish with extraordinary care, as though years of longing had silently found their way into the food itself. It was not merely flavor she had added to the meal, but fragments of her affection, patience, and unspoken love.
For a brief while, the house almost felt alive again.
A faint smile appeared upon her lips as she looked at him and asked softly,
“Why did you come alone? I was hoping to meet your wife and children as well.”
Azan lowered his gaze for a moment before replying in a calm, practical tone,
“Mom, I can only stay here for three days. I missed you a lot, but I also came because I need financial support. I’m planning to expand my business, and I hope you’ll hand over all the property documents. My stay is short, so I want to settle everything before I leave.”
The warmth that had briefly returned to the room suddenly felt fragile, as though reality had quietly entered and taken its place beside them.
