Soon, Ryla arrives home to a frown on her mother’s face.
“Detention again? Can’t you be more like your sister? She studies hard. She has a lot of good friends and she goes outside instead mooching around the house all weekend. All you do is watch your phone in your room all day. Holidays are for you to go out and play! You should make more friends and study with them and play with them! If you can’t, you should study at home instead of doomscrolling for something-teen hours straight! It’s doomscrolling because your future will be doomed if you don’t stop being lazy! Now eat your dinner before it gets cold! I made exactly what you like.”
She walked to the table, dropped her backpack on the ground next to her, then looked at the meal. Carrots with garlic. It wasn’t her favourite meal, the worst she’s tasted. Her sister loved it. Yet who was she to have her preferences remembered?
Those who put in the most effort get noticed. Or so they say. Those who work the hardest get noticed. Or so they say. Yet what is it, that gets the fortunate ones to their path to success? Yet who is it, that guides the capable ones to their road to victory? They spent 1 hour, succeeded. They spent 10, the same. Yet who was it, to climb their way up, up to the people above them, them who hadn’t any recognition, recognition that brought them fortune, fortune which meant survival. “It’s fine if you aren’t naturally talented, just work harder.” “It’s alright if you aren’t naturally gifted, just spend more time.” No. It matters. Capability, may be trained, may be not. But why is it that they can accomplish what I could never, even after years of hard work? But why is it that they can overpower my progress, with just a flick of the wrist? Cruel, unjust. They perceive. Yet when was it unfair, that the world is unfair? You do not accomplish more just because you worked harder. You may deserve more, but if the reasoning behind your thinking is this? You’re not ready for the real battlefield. Feel down because of that? Wipe your tears and choose between them. Adjust your goals according to your talents. Or keep being the 9 to 5 worker who never gets a promotion.
