Notes:
I have a box under my bed. Locked. I’ve hidden five cans of chicken and two chocolate bars.
If we’re ever low on food, we’d have this as one more last-hope emergency supply.
She wasn’t actually asleep. She heard me with the combination lock and whispered, “Ivy? What are you doing?”
I broke off a square from the chocolate bar. “Does your hand hurt?”
Quiet. Then: “A little.”
“I have a surprise for you. To help you feel better.”
A drawer pulled open. A match struck. Our bedroom bloomed in front of us.
I held out the square of chocolate. “One rule. Tell me what happened.”
The corner of her mouth lifted. “One square, one word.”
She took the chocolate from me. Before putting it in her mouth, she said, “Patch.”
Yes. This was working.
I reached under my bed, reopened the box, broke off another square. Placed it in her hand.
She thought for a second. “Guard.”
I reached under my bed again, but Chaos waved her bandaged hand. “Save the rest. I’ll tell you.”
A man at the Greenhouse. Patch. Guarding it. “He scared me, and I tripped, and that’s how I cut my hand.”
I brought my covers to my chin. “Did he…hurt you?”
“No. Just scared me.”
I thought for a second. “If that’s what really happened, it’s not that bad. Just tell Andi what you told me.”
“Maybe. I’ll think about it.”
She blew out the candle. The dark pressed against my eyes.
I listened to her breathe. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale. It took a long time for her to fall asleep.
