新晉死神「任」首次執行任務，目標是奪走在東京療養的混血少女「結城苳」的生命。然而，當任觸碰苳的靈魂之絲時，讀取到她與自己相似的悲慘過去，更被她毫無懼色、溫柔純潔的微笑打動，因而產生動搖。

得知任務失敗會導致自身靈魂毀滅的任，決定在生命的最後期限內為苳帶來幸福。他發現苳因自欺欺人而與後母產生心結，便假冒天使化解了兩人的誤會。在苳的生日，也是任務的最後一天，後母終於前來探視，苳在幸福的淚水中與後母相擁。

最終，期限已至，任在不捨與滿足中化為塵埃消逝；而苳也在不久後安詳離世，兩人雖然消失，卻在彼此生命最後的交會中獲得了救贖。
