With the delighted look on her face as she knew she had my full attention, she lightly spun around joyously.
"Do you like this dress?" She asked with great anticipation. There was a pause so she leaned forward slightly towards me to encourage a response.
"The knife." I managed to whisper from the dwindling strength as shock began to consume all of me.
"Oh. This." She replied and looked down at the red stained blade. She turned the knife from side to side as if to examine it with great care and interest.
"No. It's not meant to go with the dress." Her head shook. Yet, her grip was still tightly wrapped around the implement as if it was her prized childhood toy.
I looked quickly at the door from where she entered the warehouse. Did anyone read any of the frantic messages I left them? The tiny bit of hope I had was quickly fading by the second.
"No. I can't let go of the knife. They will come back for me so I have to keep it. That's ok with you though. Right?" She looked up with wide eyes and asked with such innocence. She was thirsty for my praise.
I took a deep breath in and gave a long sigh. She wasn't part of the plan at all. I placed my gun back in my side holster and without her seeing I fumbled for my knife inside my jacket. This will have to be quick and discreet I said to myself.
"Follow me." I barked and we both ran into the dark. Only I was the one who knew what would certainly happen next. She had no clue at all. None whatsoever.
