Darcy’s watch ticked softly in his pocket as he reclined in the back of his stagecoach.
He traced patterns on the palm of his hand, staring up at the sky.
So far he had counted about forty-eight clouds, at least that’s what he thought since he kept dozing off after losing track.
His head had been pounding like a drum all morning.
He knew he shouldn’t have accepted alcohol so early in the day, even if it was nice in the beginning.
Though his shift was going to be over in about six hours, which wasn’t too long by his terms.
His wife would pity him then if, rather when, he mentioned it over supper.
This must be what it feels like to get stepped on by a giant.
He entertained the thought for a moment with amusement.
Darcy’s eyelids grew heavy again.
“Oh for the love of God.”
He groaned.
He attempted to push himself up, only to be met with struggle.
“What on earth…”7Please respect copyright.PENANAOJkQlxTMJR
He held up a hand in front of his face.
His hand shook like a dead leaf on a windy day.
Marie would hear quite the story from her husband tonight.
At least he would get sympathy out of it.
He always managed to, especially from his loving wife.
“Mr. Adrastus?”7Please respect copyright.PENANA2vjSxgmwQl
Darcy looked up to see one of his coworkers.
“Yes, Thomas…?!”
He huffed, raising his eyebrows.
Thomas leaned over the side of the stagecoach.
“Gee no need to be so snippy! What're you doing?”
Dacry shrugged and yawned.
“I was counting clouds.”
Thomas tilted his head up at the sky.
“How many?”
Darcy made a dismissive gesture with a flick of his wrist.7Please respect copyright.PENANAh4DgdWuFtx
“I don’t remember!”
He glanced at the other man out of the corner of his eye.
“Everything is just… so… heavy. Have you ever noticed that?”
Thomas stared at Darcy’s half lidded eyes for a moment, his thin lips pursed into a tight line.
“You do you, I suppose. Just… get some sleep, alright?”7Please respect copyright.PENANAaHwXYPDexa
Darcy flung his head back to continue to stare at the sky again.
“Don’t fret, Thomas! I will.”
He pulled his watch out of his pocket.
A little less than six hours until he could go home to a wife who loved him.
