When Carter ran out the front door, he expected to have no idea where to run from Elliott’s house. He was sure that Sullivan had run off and Stewart, Anderson, and Jenkins were all chasing him
Carter was entirely wrong. As he ran out the door, he saw Stewart, Anderson, and Jenkins all standing still in the driveway. Sullivan was standing in front of them, pointing the pistol at them.
As soon as he saw Carter, Sullivan pointed the pistol at him.
“Don’t move!” he screamed.
Carter froze in his tracks.
“Get over here!” Sullivan shouted, pointing the gun in the direction of Stewart, Anderson, and Jenkins. Carter slowly walked over and stood next to them.
Sullivan pointed the gun at Carter and said: “I’ll kill you first.”
Carter could not believe what was happening.
“Why?!” he screamed. “You have already killed one person! Why would you kill again?!”
“Shut your goddamn mouth!” Sullivan screamed.
“Wasn’t killing Freeman already bad enough?” Carter asked. “Didn’t you feel any bit of sorrow for what you’ve done?”
“I did not,” Sullivan said. “I am not sorry for killing Freeman. Freeman was a low-life drug addict who created peril everywhere that he went. I killed him and the world is better off without him. And you are stupid for having been friends with him.”
“You are wrong,” Carter said. “Freeman was a very good man. He had a good heart and was a great friend. I am proud for having known him. He may have made some horrible choices, but he regretted having made any of them. He was a good man and you did a terrible thing by killing him.”
“I am happy about what I did. And I’m sure others will be, too.”
Sullivan placed the gun up against Carter’s head.
“You will regret having ever been friends with Freeman,” he said.
Sweat was running down Carter’s face. It all was going to end here. He had been excited about being invited to a party, and now he regretted ever having gone.
At least he would soon be with Freeman.
Carter kept his eyes closed, waiting until he heard the sound of the gun.
And he finally did, which made his heart practically stop.
But the shot did not come from the gun that Sullivan was holding.
Sullivan suddenly screamed in pain and collapsed to the ground. The gun fell to the ground with him.
Carter took a look and noticed that Sullivan had been shot in the back of the leg.
As Sullivan continued to scream, Carter looked around to see where the shot had come from.
